Belshazzar in Life: (B) He Was Given to Debauchery
"He drank wine before the thousand. "Belshazzar, whiles he tasted the wine.
"They drank wine" (Dan_5:1-2, Dan_5:4).
Pleasure seeking and feasting leads to debauchery. The two go hand in hand. When one gives license to the flesh, in enjoying mirth, he cultivates the grosser nature and soon turns to satisfy the more vulgar desires of the flesh.
Debauchery! What a word! How full of shameful disgust! Who ever dreamed that the fair and the beautiful belle of the ball, was in the pathway to dishonor and shame? Who ever dreamed that the splendid youth, who yielded himself to the music and the dance, would soon be grovelling in the mire of impurities?
Drinking and lust follow close on the heels of pleasure seeking. First, "revellings;" then "drunkenness and such like."
This matter cannot be discussed at length. But "society," today, is yielding itself to the vilest of pleasures. Each year new and more hellish theatricals and dances are being put forth to satisfy the cravings of cultivated lusts. God spare our dear young people!
