0286. The Wilderness Preacher

The Wilderness Preacher

"There was a man sent from God, whose name was John" (Joh_1:6).

The first scene which we need to get before us in the story of Herod, is a vision of the preacher who came into his life and so effectively moved him.

1. John the Baptist was a man, born of parents who were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and the ordinances of the Lord blameless.

2. John the Baptist was a man sent from God. He was called of God before he was born and he was filled with the Holy Ghost from the time of his birth.

3. Few men have ever been more richly endued and better panoplied for service than was John. He went forth in the spirit and in the power of Elijah. Of men born of women there was none greater than John.

4. John the Baptist was a man well taught in the things of God. Of him we read "Thou shalt go before the face of the Lord * * to give the knowledge of salvation unto His people, by the remission of their sins, through the tender mercy of God."

5. Jesus Christ bore a wonderful testimony unto John: "But what went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet." For "among those born of women there hath not arisen a greater prophet than John the Baptist."

You have before you, above, a brief view of the man who came into the life of Herod. A man who was rough and uncouth in many ways; he was robed with camel’s hair; he ate locusts and wild honey; he evaded the city centers, and preached in the wilderness.
