The Lame Man Healed

1. Peter and John had just passed through a most wonderful revival. They had been most prominent figures in the preaching. They had seen wonderful sights. A great multitude had been saved, a marvelous free-will offering had been brought in, and the wheels of God’s chariot were running swiftly on toward victory.

2. At such a time of blessing few followers of Christ would have felt the need of prayer. Too often we pray when things are dark; when obstacles overwhelm us; when the wheels of God’s chariot are blocked. Necessity drives us to prayer. With Peter and John it was far different. They prayed when all was well; when their sky was bright; when blessings abounded.

3. At once the question comes before us which is the easier to bear, prosperity or adversity? Or, when do we need God more, when the skies are bright, or when darkening clouds overhang the horizon? Surely we need God at all times, but we are likely to realize our need less when things are running smoothly.

4. The great need of the Church is prayer. Peter and John knew this. Prayer is the Church’s powerhouse; prayer is the place of communion and fellowship with the Church’s risen Head. The Church at Ephesus lost her first love, doubtless because she lost her prayer life.

5. We have here another important feature in prayer. Act_3:1 says: "Now Peter and John went up together." The separated prayer life is truly important. We need to go into the closet and pray to God in secret. However, fellowship in prayer is truly important. The Bible says, "Where two or three are gathered together in My name, there am I in the midst of them." Let us not forsake the assembling of ourselves together in the prayer room.

6. A few promises concerning prayer may help. First this one: "Every one that asketh receiveth;" and this one: "If ye ask, * * I will do."
