The People Marvel

"And all the people saw him walking and praising God: and they knew that it was he which sat for alms * * and they were filled with wonder and amazement at that which happened unto him" (Act_3:9-10).

There is no testimony like that of a changed walk and life. The people said, "It was he who sat," behold he walks and leaps and praises God. The testimony of his lips was good; the testimony of his "leaps" was better.

What could be more striking than to see the man of Gadara, who had been the terror of the neighborhood, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind?

What could weigh more with the crowds than to watch the reckless, uncouth fisherman, Peter, as he stood at Pentecost preaching the Word?

What could tell more than to look into the face of the Sanhedrin-dominated Saul, as he delivers his oration on the top of Mars’ Hill?

1. "The people took knowledge, that it was he." There was no hiding the fact. A real work of God had been wrought on this man. It was as plainly seen as the shining of the noon-day sun. He who was carried, now walks; he who could not stand, now leaps. What depths are in the words spoken about Saul of Tarsus, "Behold he prayeth."

2. "They were filled with wonder." What we need to-day is a work that will cause men to marvel. A work that cannot be humanly accounted for. A work that is on its very face a work of God. We know well enough that man, energized by satan, can work many wonderful signs. We know that, as the age nears its close and the antichrist is revealed, marvels will be done that will stagger and startle and surprise. Yet, satan can only imitate the works of God to a circumscribed degree. The very fact that so many marvelous things are being done, is a strong plea for us to plead with God, that He may do still greater things. We need in the realm of grace and in salvation a sweep of Holy Ghost power that will cause a skeptical and man-glorifying age to wonder.
