Only Doers of the Law Shall Be Justified

"For not the hearers of the Law are just before God, but the doers of the Law shall be justified" (Rom_2:13).

The whole question of salvation by the Law hinges upon the keeping of the Law.

1. The rich young ruler approached Christ upon the basis of the Law, and, to Christ’s admonition, "Thou knowest the Law," he replied: "All these have I kept from my youth up." But, he was mistaken. Christ immediately, placing His finger upon the first commandment, which reads, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me," said to the young man: "Go thy way, sell all that thou hast and give it to the poor, and come follow Me." The young man went away sorrowful. Why? Because he had stepped under the Law and Christ had found him wanting.

And so are all others found wanting,–"For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." "There is not a just man on the earth that doeth good and sinneth not."

2. Let those who make their boast of God, and rest in the Law, and are self-confident, ask themselves the question of Rom_2:21 : "Thou therefore that teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? Thou that teachest a man shall not steal, dost thou steal? Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? thou that makest thy boast of the Law, through the breaking of the Law dishonorest thou God?"

When the holiness of God, as embodied in the Law, shines forth, every man must cry, "I have sinned."
