Showing Piety First at Home

"But if any widow have children or grandchildren, let them learn first to show piety at home, and to requite their progenitors: for that is good and acceptable before God" (1Ti_5:4).

We wish to use from this passage the expression: "Let them learn first to show piety at home." What is applicable to widows, is applicable to us.

The most difficult place to manifest the Christian graces is in the home.

"We have pleasant words for the stranger,

Kind thoughts, for our sometimes guests,

But oft for our own the bitter frown,

Though we love our own the best."

Christ said to the young man, from whom He had cast the demons: "Go to thine own home and show what great things the Lord hath done for thee."

If some one should say: "I want to go far hence as a missionary," our first inquiry would be, "What are you doing at home?"

If you want to know the real spiritual asset of any believer ask their home folks about it.

Illustration: In visiting a certain home an old lady asked us to pray for her husband. After leaving the house we said to the woman’s pastor: "I cannot understand how a man could live with a woman like that, without becoming a Christian." He said in response: "My brother, you don’t know her, she is the crossest cross-patch in the community. She keeps her husband miserable with her irritableness."

Let us learn to show piety at home.
