The Steps That Led to Saul’s Conversion–The Vision of the Grace of God

"But when it pleased God, Who separated me from my mother’s womb, and called me by His grace" (Gal_1:15).

When Saul was stricken down on the Damascus road, and in a moment of time, realized that he was, in reality, fighting against Christ, then he said; "Who art Thou, Lord?" He must have been quite overcome with the reply: "I am Jesus." What grace and mercy, and what forgiveness there was in that word "Jesus." It was as though Christ had said: "You have your heart set against Me, you hold letters of authority in your pocket against Me, but I am Jesus, I love you, I am the One Who died for you, I am the One ready to save you."

Saul was immediately conquered by this display of grace. Did he deserve such mercy? Not he. Did he merit such consideration? Not he. He knew full well, that what he deserved was "wrath," but he became a recipient of grace; that what he deserved was death, but he was proffered life forevermore.

Saul saw, that day, the grace of God. And, as the days went on, he understood more and more the exceeding riches of "grace." He soon realized that he had been called by God’s grace from his mother’s womb. He felt that he had been marked out beforehand unto sonship. He never ceased to praise God for His grace.
