0454. An Evil Conscience

0454. An Evil Conscience

An Evil Conscience

"Let us draw near with a true heart, in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water" (Heb_10:22).

The expression "an evil conscience" almost startles us. Can even conscience itself become debased? Is it possible for the very thing that tells us when we are knowingly wrong, to become itself debauched?

Can the little bell that is supposed to ring, and give us a clear note, become cracked so that its note will be false? This certainly is true.

When one rejects the voice of conscience, its voice will grow weaker and weaker, until finally it will approve the wrong and become evil, itself. It seems impossible and yet it is true, that an evil conscience will call the evil good, and it will call the good evil. It will put darkness for light and light for darkness. It will say that the bitter is sweet, and that the sweet is bitter.

Evil conscience, cease thy sway,

Thou hast blighted all my day;

Now, I turn to God away,

Cleanse me now, Oh, Lord, I pray.
