Sing Praises to the Lord, Which Dwelleth in Zion

"Sing praises to the Lord, which dwelleth in Zion: Declare among the people His doings" (Psa_9:11).

The preceding subject anticipated the coming of the Lord, and His taking the Davidic throne. Our key verse, describes a continued praise. It is for us to sing praise to the Lord, enthroned, and dwelling in Zion. The people will come every year before the Lord and worship Him in the city of David. The Psalms give many praise notes, which refer to Zion, and many pleas in behalf of Zion:

Psa_14:7 : "Oh that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion!"

Psa_48:2 : "The joy of the whole earth, is Mount Zion."

Psa_50:2 : "Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God hath shined."

Psa_65:1 : "Praise waiteth for Thee, O God, in Sion."

Psa_69:35 : "God will save Zion, and will build the cities of Judah."

Psa_87:2-3 : "The Lord loveth the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob.

"Glorious things are spoken of thee, O city of God. Selah."

Psa_97:1,Psa_97:8 : "The Lord reigneth; let the earth rejoice."

"Zion heard, and was glad."

Psa_99:1-2,Psa_99:3 : "The Lord reigneth."

"The Lord is great in Zion."

"Let them praise Thy great and terrible name."

Psa_102:13 : "Thou shalt arise, and have mercy upon Zion."

Psa_102:16 : "When the Lord shall build up Zion."

Psa_132:13 : "For the Lord hath chosen Zion; He hath desired it for His habitation."

Psa_135:21 : "Blessed be the Lord out of Zion, which dwelleth at Jerusalem."

The one who can read the passages above, and read them in their setting, and then call Zion the Church, is certainly blind to dispensational truth.

The one who vainly imagines that such marvelous prophecies have been fulfilled, in Christ sitting at the right hand of the Father, is quite as blind.

Zion is Jerusalem. The Lord dwelling in Zion, is the Lord dwelling in Jerusalem. It is a literal Zion, a literal Lord, and a literal dwelling.

How we miss the things God has prepared for us, when we go into a system of spiritualizing Scripture. When we take distinct and definite prophecies and call them the poetic fancies of David we make void the promises of God. The Lord will dwell in Zion. He will be worshiped there. His people will declare Him among the nations.

When the Lord reigns in Zion, He will lift up His hand on suffering Israel. He will save her from the very gates of death, He will revive her. Then she will show forth His praises in the gates of Zion, and rejoice in His salvation. Then the nations will sink into the pit which they digged; their feet will be tangled in the net which they hid. The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all nations that forget God. The needy shall be remembered and their expectations shall be brought to mind. And Israel restored and reigning will sing everlasting praises to God.

Unto the Lord sweet praises sing,

Emmanuel doth mercy bring;

He comes on Zion’s hill to dwell;

And all the world will gladly swell

His praises. For the joy of earth

Is Zion. O her matchless worth!

Sweet praise awaiteth Thee, O Lord,

In Zion, city of our God.
