0476. Arise, O Lord, Let Not Man Prevail
Arise, O Lord, Let Not Man Prevail
"Arise, O Lord, let not man prevail: "Let the nations be judged in Thy sight" (Psa_9:19).
The expression, "Arise, O Lord," is common in the Psalms. Herein Israel is calling upon the Lord to come forth from His Heavenly dwelling, and overthrow the deism of man.
The time is upon us even now, when the nations are beginning to imagine that they are more than mortal man. When the Lord does once arise, when the Lord returns, He will make low the lofty looks of men.
"For the day of the Lord of Hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low:"
"And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be made low: and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day."
Everywhere among men we are hearing that false note which emphasizes the deism of man. O that men might know that they themselves are nothing! O that they might remember that they are as the grass that withereth away! How frail is mortal man!
Our key verse says, "Let the nations be judged in Thy sight," and the Hebrew word reads, "Let the nations be judged at Thine appearing! Let the nations know themselves to be but men."
When the Lord comes the mighty men of earth, her great men, her chief captains will cry to the rocks and the mountains to fall upon them and to hide them from the face of Him Who sitteth upon the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb.
Psa_9:20 of our chapter reads, "Put them in fear, O Lord." God will put them in fear, He will appoint terror unto them. Men’s hearts will be failing (struck with heart failure) for the looking forward to the things which are coming to pass upon the earth.
Men may combine against the Lord, but men cannot prevail. Jesus Christ will bring down the lofty and the proud and those who exalt themselves, He will exalt the meek, and establish the humble.
"Arise, O Lord, let not men prevail."
Arise, O Lord, O rend the veil
Of Heaven–let not man prevail.
Put men in fear, that they may know
They are but men, not God. Bring low
The proud and lofty–ev’ry one
Who lifts himself against the Son:
Let Christ alone exalted be,
In earth and Heaven, land and sea.
