0509. The King at War
The King at War
"Gird Thy sword upon Thy thigh, O most Mighty, with Thy glory and Thy majesty.
"And in Thy majesty ride prosperously because of truth and meekness and righteousness; and Thy right hand shall teach thee terrible things.
"Thine arrows are sharp in the heart of the King’s enemies; whereby the people fall under Thee" (Psa_45:3-5).
We are astounded, at first thought, that One so gracious and so fair, should be so strikingly described with a sword upon His thigh, and sharp arrows in His hand.
The verses speak of our Lord as He comes to a world which has disowned and rejected Him. He comes to judge. He comes in wrath against all the ungodly. He comes to protect His elect from the ravages of their enemy.
Get the Setting: The kings of the earth have set themselves together and their people have confederated against the Lord–they are the King’s enemies. Our Lord is about to come to the Mount of Olives, and His Queen is coming with Him.
The antichrist has his battle in array against the Lord Jesus, and the King is at war.
1. Behold His might. "O most Mighty." "Who is there that can stand before Him!" When He spoke, worlds were swung into space. By His word, worlds are held together. He is the one omnipotent God. He is the One, most mighty. He is "the Lord strong and mighty." He is "the Lord mighty in battle."
2. Behold His majesty. "With Thy * * majesty." The word "majesty" has to do with His Kingliness. He is no longer the meek and lowly Nazarene. He is the mighty and majestic King. He comes crowned with many crowns. He comes as "King of kings and Lord of lords." "The voice of the Lord is powerful. The voice of the Lord is full of majesty."
3. Behold His glory. "With Thy glory." Many Scriptures describe the glory of our Lord’s return. He will come in "power and great glory." Let us "give unto the Lord the glory due His name; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness."
When Jesus Christ comes again, the world will be overwhelmed with the forthshining of the glory of His countenance.
There was a time on earth when Jesus Christ was met in the Garden by His enemies, He said, "I am He." Immediately His enemies fell back, as dead men. For the moment the Lord let His glory burst forth, and this overwhelmed the people. When He comes again, the people will fall before Him.
4. Behold His power. "Thy right hand shall teach thee terrible things." The right hand is the emblem of authority. Jesus Christ will come forth, conquering and to conquer. Before His scepter all must bow.
5. Behold His sword and His arrows. Utensils of war. These will be sharp in the heart of the King’s enemies. When Sennacherib’s armies surrounded the king of Israel, the Lord went forth and slew one hundred and eighty-five thousand men. This is but a faint picture of the time when the armies of the antichrist will encamp against Israel and the Lord will descend from Heaven, with His drawn sword and His sharp arrows. The slain of the Lord in that day will be innumerable. "Then will the Lord go forth and fight as in the day of battle."
With arrows flying, sinners sighing,
In His majesty He’ll ride.
With sword fast swinging, judgment bringing:
In the rocks the wicked hide.
