0650. The Intensity of His Compassion

The Intensity of His Compassion

"And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou Me?" (Act_9:4-5).

This passage will show you the compassion of Christ, which was so intense that He cried, not merely, "Saul, why persecutest thou Me?" but He cried, "Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou Me?"

Saul had in his pocket letters of authority from the high priest at Jerusalem. He was en route to Damascus in order that he might "carry bound" the Christians of that city. Christ stopped him in the madness of his quest: and said unto him, "Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou Me?" The light that fell upon Saul, struck him to the ground, and he cried, "Who art Thou, Lord?" The Lord replied: "I am Jesus Whom thou persecutest." The word "Jesus" means Saviour. In other word’s, Christ said to Saul: "Your heart is full of bitterness to Me, but I love and want to save you."

What we need above all things is this compassion for lost men.

"Don’t you know the world is dying,

For a little bit of love?

Everywhere you hear them crying,

For a little bit of love.

For the love that rights the wrong,

Fills the heart with joy and song."

Augustine wrote, "I take the whole Christ for my Saviour, I take the whole Bible for my staff, I take the whole Church for my fellowship, and I take the whole world for my parish." This is what we must do if we are to possess the intensity of the compassion of Christ.
