0662. Master (Gr. Despote), Sovereign Lord

0662. Master (Gr. Despote), Sovereign Lord

Master (Gr. Despote), Sovereign Lord

"But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. If a man will therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the Master’s use, and prepared unto every good work" (2Ti_2:20-21).

The word translated "Master" in the passage before us, is a Greek word suggesting Christ our "Despot," or, our Sovereign Lord. It may seem to some, uncanny, to crown Christ with absolute sway; complete power over all we are and all we have,–but that is exactly what we should do.

One of the Old Testament kings said: "I am Thine and all that I have is Thine." We should say this to Christ.

The Apostle Paul continually signed himself, "Paul, the bondslave of Jesus Christ." In doing this, he accepted Christ as his Master, "Despotes."

Certainly, our Lord is worthy of all honor and can be intrusted with all we bring to Him. In speaking of Him as Master, we need to yield ourselves to Him, and our members as instruments for His pleasure. We should have no fear to present our bodies as a living sacrifice to Jesus Christ; we should be subject unto Him, abandoned unto Him, surrendered unto Him, wholly consecrated to Him, with all fear. It is a solemn question–How many of us have really acknowledged that we are not our own? How many of us have really given ourselves unreservedly to the Lord Jesus Christ? How many of us can say:

"I’ll go where You want me to go, dear Lord,

Over mountain, or plain, or sea;

I’ll say what You want me to say, dear Lord,

I’ll be what You want me to be"?

The young man who joined the army, under the stars and stripes, absolutely signed himself over to his government. He was wholly under the orders of Uncle Sam. Does it seem unreasonable, that children of God should give themselves unreservedly to Jesus Christ?

The glory of it all, lies in the fact that when we do crown Christ, as Master, and when we do fully yield to Him, He always makes our life blessed. Christ said of old, "Oh, that Israel had hearkened unto Me, I would have fed them with the finest of wheat." We are always sure to fare better when we wholly follow His will and way. If we turn every man to his own way, we will turn to sorrow, sighing, and defeat.
