Christ Interpreted the Father in His Works
"The Son can do nothing of Himself, bat what He seeth the Father do; for what things soever He doeth, these also the Son doeth likewise" (Joh_5:19).
Jesus Christ was manifested unto men by the mighty works which He wrought. These works forever place Him beyond the pale of mere men. He was declared to be the Son of God, by the miracles which He wrought and by the works which He did.
"Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by Him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know" (Act_2:22).
But Jesus Christ did more in His works than manifest His own Deity; He also manifested the heart of God. This is true because He said "My Father worketh hitherto, and I work" (Joh_5:17).
Again He said: "As the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth; even so the Son quickeneth whom He will" (Joh_5:21).
God was in Christ and Christ was in God. Every good work which Christ did, He did from the Father, because He said, "Many good works have I showed you from My Father" (Joh_10:32).
He also said: "If I do not the works of My Father, believe Me not; but if I do, though you believe not in Me, believe the Father; that ye may know and believe, that the Father is in Me, and I in Him."
It will, therefore, be profitable when we study the Gospels and behold our Lord Jesus going about doing good, to remember that He is interpreting the Father. Whether He is turning water into wine, or giving the blind their sight, or feeding the multitudes, or healing lepers, or raising the dead, our Lord Jesus is always manifesting the Father. He was marking out, in His every deed, the heart of God.
"When Jesus Christ raised up the dead,
When multitudes by Him were fed,
When blind and halt and lame were led,
When ‘peace be still’ to waves He said:
‘Twas ‘Christ’ and ‘God,’ not Christ alone,
The Father, and the Father’s Son,
Who wrought the works, did all ’twas done
From morning until setting sun."
