0676. The Sex of Angels

0676. The Sex of Angels

The Sex of Angels

"For in the resurrection, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in Heaven" (Mat_23:30).

This passage records the words of Christ. He is answering the question of the Sadducees concerning the woman who had seven husbands–"In the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven?" Christ taught that sex would not have place in Heaven, and in stating that fact He refers to the angels, who neither marry nor are given in marriage.

Thus we may not speak of the angels as being, the one, of different sex from another.

Most of us, however, think of angels in the feminine gender. The artists invariably picture them as women. However the Word of God does not sex them at all, but, in speaking of them, it always shows their personality by the personal pronoun, and always uses the masculine gender of the pronoun. This may be done, perhaps, because Adam was first made, and because he was the stronger of the sacred pair.
