0704. "Prayer"
"Prayer"
"But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the Word" (Act_6:4).
The result of Pentecost then, is not only preaching but it is also praying. The Holy Spirit descended while the disciples were in the upper room, "continuing with one accord with prayer and supplication."
Many of us too are willing to pray faithfully until the Spirit begins to work, but after that we cease our supplications. It was not so in the days of the Apostles, for we read in Act_2:42, "And they continued * * in the breaking of bread and in prayers."
Following the Day of Pentecost, Peter and John went up together into the Temple at the hour of prayer. The kindlings of the Spirit demand prayer, but the fire will only continue to burn as we keep on praying.
In Act_4:31, we read "And when they had prayed the place was shaken where they were assembled together." Until Christians learn to pray, they will not know the secret of God. In Act_9:11, Ananias was told to go down into a street called Straight and to inquire in the house of Judas, for one called Saul of Tarsus: "For behold he prayeth."
"Prayer is the Christian’s native air,
The Christian’s vital breath."
In Act_16:25, Paul and Silas are praying at midnight. In Act_20:36, Paul and the saints are kneeling down and praying. Certainly those who cut the cable of prayer, cut the secret of their strength.
