The Adaptability of the Word

"Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s" (Psa_103:5).

We wonder if our readers have ever heard a sermon that seemed to fit every one in the audience. A sermon that carried with it the needed solution to every difficulty; a solace to every grief; an inspiration for every task. This is just what the Bible does.

The world is filled with many countries and peoples. Each kindred and each tongue has its own customs, its own culture, its own convictions, and yet the Bible is appropriate for each.

The king and the plebian, the scientist and the savage, the literary man and the illiterate, may all find in the Bible the supplement of their every need. The child at his mother’s knee, the youth stepping on the threshold of a larger vision; the business man pressed with many vexing problems; the aged, nearing the other shore,–all find in the Bible that which satisfies their mouth with good things.

There is in the Bible, a word of comfort to the brokenhearted, of encouragement to the weak, of guidance to the strong.

The Word of God presents plain pictures of practical experiences, and wonderful stories of everyday life, which charm and strengthen and cheer.

The Bible possesses a literary value, a scientific knowledge, a poetic beauty, that surpasses all other books.

It is at the same time, simple and profound.

Where is there another book that meets every need, supplies every demand, and adapts itself to every age, as does the Bible?

"Oh, wonderful, wonderful Word of the Lord!

True wisdom its pages unfold;

And though we may read them a thousand times o’er,

They never, no never grow old.

Each line hath a treasure, each promise a pearl,

That all if they will may secure;

And we know that when time and the world pass away,

God’s Word shall for ever endure."
