0723. The Foretellings of the Word
The Foretellings of the Word
"But with the precious Blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot" (1Pe_1:19).
To foretell is not human. Mediums may get from satan some suggested course of future events, but, at best, all human prophecy is a guess.
Where is the man who can step forth and foretell the future of his own home, or his own city, or his own country, for the next decade? And yet, the Word of God foretells, in detail, the future of individuals, of cities, of countries and of nations, not for a decade, but for centuries, and for millenniums.
Surely the Bible is a wonderful word when it can write prophecy one, two, or three thousand years in advance, more accurately than the best of historians can write history the day after history is made.
The Word of God foretold that the city of Tyre would be overthrown; that the very walls of the city and its very dust would be thrown into the sea. This was partially fulfilled by Nebuchadnezzar, but not completely fulfilled, until Alexander the Great, more than two centuries after, came upon the scene.
The Word of God prophesied that Egypt should not any more be great among the nations; it foretold that the pride of Egypt’s power would come down; that Egypt would be a base country; that there should be no more a prince out of the land of Egypt upon its throne.
As wonderful as it seems, those prophecies have been fulfilled, during two thousand, three hundred and fifty years.
The Word of God prophesied that Babylon, its glory and its beauty, should be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.
Centuries after the prophecy was written in Isaiah, Jerome wrote that the site of Babylon was turned into a hunting ground for Persian kings. Today, no one lives on its ancient site; no shepherd feeds his flock and no Bedouin pitches his tent there.
The Word of God foretold that Israel and Judah would come under a curse. Their cities would be made waste; their temples destroyed; even their enemies would be astonished at the desolation of their land. The tribes of Israel were to be scattered among all the nations, and the strangers (foreigners) were to come from afar and view their land.
Everyone knows how these prophecies, written many centuries ago, have literally been fulfilled.
Oh, wonderful, wonderful Word of the Lord,
What marvelous prophecies Thine;
The story of peoples and nations foretold
With unerring forecast, Divine.
