0732. Hezekiah and Coniah Attacked
Hezekiah and Coniah Attacked
"In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death" (2Ki_20:1).
1. Hezekiah’s sickness is particularly; striking, because when he lay at the point of death, there was no heir apparent to the throne: His son Manasseh, who succeeded him as king and who was in the lineage of David through Solomon, to Joseph, was not born until four years after Hezekiah was healed.
Had Hezekiah died, satan would have accomplished his purpose of breaking the chain of descent, and thus the lineage written in Matthew’s Gospel could never have been completed.
2. Another seeming victory for satan was the case of Coniah. Coniah the son of Jehoiakim was under the wrath of God, for God had said:
"For no man of his seed shall prosper,
Sitting upon the throne of David,
And ruling any more in Judah" (Jer_22:30).
Satan now must assuredly have considered his strategy against the kingly seed altogether successful, for God Himself had set aside the seed of royal line, and refused it the Davidic Throne.
Satan however was foiled, for God had protected the promised Seed, and when Christ was born, it was then revealed that He was indeed the Son of David, by Mary through Nathan; but being the "supposed" and legal son of Joseph, He could be reckoned of the kingly line of Solomon without actually being the seed of Coniah, whom God had cursed.
Apostate preachers who proclaim Christ as Joseph’s son, make Christ’s heirship to the Davidic throne impossible, because Coniah was in the line from David unto Joseph, and God had decreed that no seed of Coniah should prosper sitting upon the throne of David.
When Christ shall come again and reign over Israel restored, He will easily make good every promise of God made to David, as His heirship is established in both branches of His "earthly house." He is actually heir of David through Mary and legally heir through Joseph, husband of Mary.
