0836. The Faith That Walks
The Faith That Walks
"For we walk by faith, not by sight" (2Co_5:7).
That which gives most believers concern is not the big task, wrought out perhaps before the public eye, or under the toil of careful preparation. The difficult task is the insignificant common round, the trivial duties that mark the daily walk.
It is easier to mount up with wings as eagles; it is easier to run without being weary than it is to walk and not to faint.
Faith, however, is sufficient for the difficult thing. It is never greater than when it carries us victoriously through the grind of every-hour responsibilities.
Christ said: "I must walk to-day, and to-morrow and the day following" (Luk_13:33); and so also must we. We must be clothed with faith to meet the sorrows and the shadows, as well as the singings and the sunlight that may lie upon our path.
How often we would have given up in despair and turned back had it not been that faith filled our hearts with courage.
"I must have the Saviour with me,
For I cannot walk alone,
I must feel His presence with me,
And His arms about me thrown.
Then my soul will fear no ill,
Let Him lead me where He will,
I will go without a murmur,
And His footsteps follow still."
By faith Enoch walked with God. He walked with God in the midst of an age that was fast corrupting itself and turning away from Jehovah; he walked with God in the midst of his own home, where he begat sons and daughters.
Surely we then may walk by faith in this our day. To be sure sin is much the same as it was in Enoch's day; but we have added light and increased blessings–should we not have a greater faith?
"Closer, Lord, to Thee I come,
Light of life Divine;
Through the ever Blessed Son,
Joy and peace are mine;
Let me in Thy love abide,
Keep me ever near Thy side,
In the "Rock of Ages" hide,–
Closer, Lord, to Thee."
