0850. A False Peace, or Peace When There Is No Peace
A False Peace, or Peace When There Is No Peace
"For they have healed the hurt of the daughter of My people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace" (Jer_8:11).
The Word of God tells us of some who make lies their refuge, and falsehoods their hiding places. Then comes the solemn warning: "The hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place" (Isa_28:11). Let us examine some phases of a false peace.
1. There is such a thing as a false peace concerning salvation. "Not every one that saith unto Me, Lord, Lord, shall enter." How many are going religiously to hell? How many are building their hopes on the sand? "Every one that heareth these sayings of Mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand."
Alas! Alas! Satan has deluded many. There are those who think that their good works will save them; and yet God plainly declares that "salvation is by grace and apart from works."
There are those who think that their church-membership will save them, and yet God plainly says that "He that believeth not shall be damned."
There are some who imagine that their morals will save them, and yet God has declared the whole world under sin.
Surely when God sweeps away the refuge of lies, many who had dreamed of peace, will find themselves under the curse.
2. There is such a thing as saying, Peace, peace, nationally, when wars and sudden destructions are in the air.
Let us read 1Th_5:3 : "For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape."
William Jennings Bryan is a good and great man, and we believe him to be a Christian man and a lover of Truth, and yet he was utterly deceived as to world peace. A few years ago he was saying, Peace, peace when there was no peace.
To-day there is a great effort on the part of the world's diplomats to bring peace by some league of nations. Soon, perhaps, there will be another worldwide proclamation of peace. Politicians and the daily press, the platform and the pew will more or less succumb to this new false message.
Yet in spite of all man-built hopes there can be no peace until Christ the Prince of Peace comes.
