The Twelve Tribes Restored Under One King

Our purpose is to give a swift survey of the prophecies concerning Israel's restoration under one King, the Lord Jesus Christ. In doing this we plan to carry you through most of the major and minor Prophets, gathering here and there some of the Scriptures which mark this special truth. It will be marvelous to note how the Holy Spirit bears witness through so many sources. There is a unity and a continuity in the prophecies that must settle all quibbling as to what the purpose of God is in behalf of Israel.

1. The Davidic Covenant which gives definite promise of the continuance of David's throne and of Christ's connection with that throne, is found in II Samuel, chapter 7. The covenant says this of David's seed: "I will establish the throne of His Kingdom for ever." Sin was to be followed by chastisement, but sin was not to abrogate the covenant, because we read again: "And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever."

When these words were spoken, David sat before the Lord and said, "Who am I, O Lord God? and what is my house, that Thou hast brought me hitherto? This was yet a small thing in Thy sight, O Lord God; but Thou hast spoken also of Thy servant's house for a great while to come. And hast regarded me according to the estate of a man of high degree, O Lord God."

2. The Davidic Covenant was established in Christ, when Gabriel spoke to Mary. The record is found in Luk_1:31-33 : "And thou shalt bring forth a Son, and shalt call His name Jesus. * * and the Lord God shall give unto Him the throne of His father David: and He shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever, and of His Kingdom there shall be no end." Thus everything promised to David is reiterated to Mary.

3. Once more the covenant is set forth when Peter said of David, "Knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, He would raise up Christ to sit on his throne" (Act_2:30).

Of one thing we are sure: The Tabernacle of David which has fallen down is to be rebuilt; its ruins are to be set up; and this is to be done after the Lord Jesus returns (see Act_15:16).

Jesus was once crowned with thorns in Jerusalem; and He is yet to be crowned as King, over a restored Israel.
