What Micah and Nahum Say About Christ As King

"But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall He come forth unto Me that is to be ruler in Israel; Whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting" (Mic_5:2)

1. Micah is the next of the minor Prophets. Note chapter Jer_4:1-5 : "But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the House of the Lord shall be established in the top of the mountains, * * and many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, and to the House of the God of Jacob; * * for the Law shall go forth of Zion, and the Word of the Lord from Jerusalem. And He shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree; and none shall make them afraid: for the mouth of the Lord of Hosts hath spoken it."

God pity the people who are prematurely crying, "Peace," when there is no peace. Our social service friends may try to bring in a millennium without a Christ, but they cannot. Our preachers may, many of them, think that the day of disarmament is at hand. The Spirit, however, says, "There shall be wars and rumors of wars," nation lifting up sword against nation.

We cannot have the peace spoken of by the Prophet Micah with a loose devil and an absent Lord. Wait until the last days reach their climax in the coming of the Lord; wait until His House is established in the top of the mountains; wait until the Law and the Word of the Lord goes forth from Jerusalem; wait until He shall judge among the nations,–then will the earth laugh out in her gladness, and we will seek peace and pursue it, and Micah's prophecy will come to pass. The Lord hath spoken it. Oh, preachers of the Lord Jesus, pass the Word along!

2. In the Book of Nahum, which comes after Micah, we have before us the destruction of Nineveh. Yet, even here, there is a prophetic view which clearly reaches to the last days. Nineveh is a vision of apostate conditions among the nations. This heads up in the last days, when the earth is to be corrupted, as it was in the days of Noah, and of Lot. Then the day of indignation comes. During that day, as we read in Nah_1:6-7, when the fierceness of His anger and fury are poured out; even then the Lord will be a stronghold and know them that trust Him. Then, when for the elect's sake the days of tribulation are shortened, shall the evangel of peace be published by Israel, and of Judah it will be said: "O Judah, keep thy solemn feasts, perform thy vows: for the wicked shall no more pass through thee: he is utterly cut off."
