Thou Shalt Remember the Way the Lord Led Thee

"And thou shalt remember all the way which the Lord thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness" (Deu_8:2, f. c.).

During forty years the Lord God led the children of Israel; He led them through a great and terrible wilderness, wherein were fiery serpents and scorpions and drought, where there was no water. There never was a moment by day that God's cloud was not above them, there never was a moment by night that the pillar of fire failed to shine. He Who kept Israel, never slumbered nor slept. His faithfulness was fresh every evening and new every morning. For forty years this was true.

God had found Israel in a desert land, in a waste and howling wilderness; He led him about, He instructed him, He kept him as the apple of His eye.

As an eagle stirreth up her nest, fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her wings, taketh them, beareth them on her wings, so the Lord alone did lead him.

The Lord made Israel to ride on the high places of the earth that he might eat the increase of the fields.

The Lord made Israel to suck honey out of the rock.

The Lord fed Israel with butter of kine, and milk of sheep, with the fat of lambs, with the fat of kidneys of wheat.

Surely there was nothing left undone that God could do to bless His people.

Is this not true, also, of us? Who is there among us who can count his blessings? What good thing hath the Lord withheld from us?

"Oh, to grace how great a debtor

Daily I'm constrained to be!

Let Thy goodness, like a fetter,

Bind my wandering heart to Thee;

"Here I'll raise my Ebenezer,

Hither by Thy help I've come;

And I hope, by Thy good pleasure,

Safely to arrive at home."
