In Whom We Have Redemption–A Backward Look
"For as many as are of the works of the Law, are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the Book of the Law to do them" (Gal_3:10).
Christ provided redemption through His Blood, "In Whom we have redemption through His Blood."
Redemption covers a wide scope of truth. It always has to do with deliverance. It is the grace of God buying us from, and bringing- us out of sin's bondage.
Redemption has a backward look. We have redemption (see Eph_1:7; Col_1:14).
1. We have been redeemed from the curse of the Law. There was a time when we were under condemnation. The Law with its just demands proclaimed us guilty. Its penalties stood over us. Its sentence was just and irrevocable. We were children of wrath. Hell stood with its gates ajar, ready to receive us at our coming. Then Christ died, and through His Blood He reached down and lifted us up, brought us out, delivered us from the Law and all its terrors. He became a curse for us. He was born under the Law, subject to the Law, and He wholly fulfilled the Law. Then He stepped in, under the curse of the Law, and was made a curse for us that He might redeem us from the Law. And, praise God, we are redeemed.
2. We have been redeemed from all lawlessness. "Who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from all iniquity" (Tit_2:14). The word "iniquity" covers that particular form of sin which is expressed by the word "lawlessness." The same word is used in 1Jn_3:4 : "Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the Law." The unsaved are walking in their own ways; they are in rebellion against God. They are bolshevists against the government of God; they are traitors. They are like planets swung from their orbits.
When Christ died, He brought us back into fellowship with God. We were delivered out of the wilds of lawlessness, and we became the bondslaves of the Lord Jesus Christ. We took up His way, wore His yoke and became subservient to His will. Praise God, His yoke is easy, and His burden is light.
3. We have been redeemed from our vain behavior. "Forasmuch as ye. know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation * * but with the precious Blood of Christ" (1Pe_1:18-19).
Once we walked in the lusts of the flesh, fulfilling the desires of the mind. Once we walked as other Gentiles walk in the vanity of our minds; our understanding was darkened, our life was alienated from God. But we are redeemed, bought back, delivered.
The Book of Exodus is the Book of Israel's redemption because it tells the story of Israel's deliverance from Egyptian bondage, from Egyptian tyranny, and from Egyptian manner of life. Bless God, we too have had our exodus; we have been redeemed.
"I am redeemed, but not with silver;
I am bought, but not with gold;
Bought with a price–the Blood of Jesus,
Precious price of love untold."
