The Bread the Staff of Life

"I am the Living Bread which came down from Heaven: if any man eat of this Bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is My flesh, which I will give for the life of the world" (Joh_6:51).

We have already noted how Christ, the Bread, imparts life. We now have three additional statements to make.

1. The Bread sustains life. Bread is not a mere luxury, it is a necessity. Christ said, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God."

No wonder that Job desired the words of His mouth more than his necessary food. No wonder that we read in Act_20:32, "And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the Word of His grace, which is able to build you up."

He who feeds his soul on the "Living Bread," will find the new life sustained and built up.

2. The Bread strengthens life. There is nothing in the world that will put up the portals against disease germs, like healthful diet. We know a physician who said, "A full stomach is the best protection against bacteria." We do not know how true this is, but we do know that eating the Living Bread invigorates the soul and strengthens the life against all forms of sin and of evil.

Saints who are rooted and grounded in the Word of God, are not carried about by every cunningly devised doctrine of men.

Saints who know the Book and hide its messages in their hearts will find that the Word will cleanse them from every evil way, and will guard them from the evil path.

When saints are spiritually weak and sickly there is no tonic that will cause them to grow up into the measure of the stature of a full-grown man in Christ Jesus, like the Word of God.

3. The Bread satisfies life. The Word of God is a satisfying portion. It is sweeter than honey and the honeycomb.

It was God Who said, "O that Israel had hearkened unto Me, I would have fed him with the finest of the wheat."

The worldly man may demand the dainties of sin, prepared in the most pleasant style, in the kitchen of men and by the caterers of satan, but the child of God is satisfied with the Bread that comes down from Heaven.

"Break Thou the Bread of Life, dear Lord, to me,

As Thou didst break the loaves, beside the sea;

Beyond the Sacred Page I seek Thee, Lord;

My spirit pants for Thee, O Living Word."
