1242. No Man Ever Spake As Christ Spake

1242. No Man Ever Spake As Christ Spake

No Man Ever Spake As Christ Spake

"The officers answered, Never man spake like this Man" (Joh_7:46).

Once more we have three things to say of our Lord Jesus Christ, as we compare His words to the words of men.

1. No man ever spoke the Truth as He spoke it. On one occasion Christ said: "For this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the Truth." Pilate, astonished replied: "What is truth?" Every word that Christ ever uttered was truth and nothing but truth.

(1) His words were historically true. The historicity of every statement which fell from the lips of Christ, no one need doubt. When Jesus Christ reached back into the Old Testament Scriptures and spoke of Noah, of Job, of Abraham, of David, of Jonah, every word He spoke verified history. These men were historically true not only because the Old Testament Scriptures bear record of them, but because the Lord Jesus Christ vindicated their record.

(2) His words were scientifically true. Every statement that Christ ever made will stand the searchlight of science. Sometimes scientists dare to differ with the words of Christ, but it is not long until they are compelled to bend the knee, and own Christ true. He never uttered a word that true science must not ultimately endorse.

(3) His words were ethically true. There were no loopholes in the moral conceptions and statements of the Lord Jesus Christ. His ethical vision was wholly correct–correct in the age in which He lived, correct in every age. The Lord Jesus Christ never lapsed, speaking a word in permission of any form of evil. There was not the shadow of a turning with Him. He was ethically true.

(4) His words were prophetically true. The Lord Jesus prophesied many things that lie yet in the distant future, and yet every word He spoke is "Yea and Amen," and time will vindicate the truth of His prophecies.

(5) His words were theologically true. Christ dealt in all the great underlying values of theology. In all of this He never mixed terms; He never made a statement concerning God, or sin, or satan, or salvation, or eternity, or any other theological conception that was not altogether true.

2. No other man ever spake with the authority with which Christ spake. In the beginning of the ministry of our Lord, Pharisee, Sadducee, Scribe, and Lawyer sought to catch Him with test questions; but never did they entrap Him. A book might be written about the clear, clean-cut way in which Christ always answered His opponents. There were no question marks about His statements; no vagueness as to His meaning; no hesitancy in His words. He knew, and therefore, He spoke. Surely no man ever spake as this Man.

3. None other spake with the simplicity with which He spake. His words were profound, but plain; His words were weighty, but easily comprehended; they shone with a luster, and simplicity of statement, that staggered His adversaries. He dealt with the great questions of the day in such a way that a wayfaring man needed not to err therein. Surely no one ever spake as He spake.
