1413. The Spirit Bears Witness
The Spirit Bears Witness
"For there are three that bear record in Heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are One" (1Jn_5:7).
The work of the Holy Spirit is preeminently to convict the world concerning Christ, and, to instruct the believer concerning Christ. He convicts the world of sin because they believe not in Christ.
The Holy Spirit convicts the world of righteousness because Christ has gone to the Father. He convicts the world of judgment because Christ is judging the prince of this world.
The Holy Spirit takes of the things of Christ and shows them unto the believer.
A beautiful story is told suggesting that Rebekah might have asked Isaac, soon after their marriage, who the dear old gentleman was, who led her across the desert sands. Isaac is supposed to reply: "Rebekah, do you not know him? he rode at your side, talked with you along the way." Rebekah replies, "But Isaac, he was always talking to me about you and about Abraham."
The story is not so far fetched as one might think. The Holy Spirit is our Eliezer; He walks at our side. He is always talking to us about Christ. He bears the same witness that the Father and the Word bear, because He is one with the Father, and He is the author of the Word. Thus it is that the Father, the Word and the Holy Spirit bear record to every claim Jesus Christ ever made.
