Demonism–Sin's Irresistibleness

"They * * found the man, out of whom the demons were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind" (Luk_8:35).

1. Satan is a despot, a demigod, driving before him the dupes of his domain. The Word of God describes satan as the strong man in charge of his house, he is keeping his palace and his goods are in peace (see Luk_11:21).

Satan is described as the fowler who has prepared his nets and who has taken captive the unwary at his will (see 2Ti_2:26).

Satan is described again as the one who bound a woman with an infirmity (see Luk_13:16).

The world may mock the devil and minimize his power, and make him no more than a passing joke, but the Word of God says that the archangel Michael, "when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing judgment, but said, The Lord rebuke thee" (Jud_1:9, \1911 Bible).

Satan defiles His sanctuaries with the multitude of his iniquities; he fills the midst with violence (see Eze_28:16-18).

Satan is the one who makes the earth to tremble and shakes kingdoms; he makes the world as a wilderness and destroys the cities thereof (see Isa_14:16-18).

There was a Jewish king named Jehoiachim who was bound in prison in Babylon for thirty-seven years, he is a picture of the myriads of men whom satan has bound.

2. The Saviour is a deliverer who breaks the power of the devil and sets the prisoner free. "They * * found the man, out of whom the demons were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind" (Luk_8:35, \1911 Bible).

No man could tie this man of Gadara. No man could tame him. If they sought to bind him with chains and fetters he would break the bands. He was driven of the demon into the wilderness.

No human man can set satan's captive free.

When the Lord Jesus passed by, He spoke the word, "then went the demons out of the man."

On one occasion, the Lord Jesus Christ entered into Nazareth, He opened the parchment of the Prophet Isaiah, and He found the place where it is written, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He hath anointed Me * * to preach deliverance to the captives, * * to set at liberty them that are bruised."

"And He folded the roll, and He gave it again to the attendant, and sat down * * and He began to say unto them, This day is this Scripture fulfilled in your ears" (Luk_4:18, Luk_4:20-21, \1911 Bible).

Jesus Christ proclaimed Himself as the One who could open the prison bars to the captives; who could set at liberty the ones whom satan had bound.

The Apostle Paul speaks of his commission thus: To turn them from the power of satan unto God (see Act_26:18).

Thank God we have a deliverer in Jesus Christ.
