Christ the Preacher, with His Hearers Doubting

"And they said, Is not this Joseph's son?" (Luk_4:22).

When the Lord Jesus stood in the Nazarite pulpit, and preached the Word, preached it with conviction, preached it with gracious words, the people said, "Is not this Joseph's son?" (Luk_4:22).

A true preacher with a true message and gracious words, does not mean necessarily a preacher with a testimony received.

We are living in an age of doubt. There is not an eternal verity set forth in the Word of God, that is not set aside by doubting men.

The Lord Jesus Christ was God the Son, but the people said, "Is not this Joseph's son?

When the Virgin Birth is held in question, the very vitals of the Gospel are taken away.

The difficulty of the hour is not so much that men are ignorant, but that they are wilfully ignorant.

All men could satisfy themselves as to the verity of truth, if they cared to take the time to look into the Word of Truth. The doubters of to-day are studying the books of men. Some of them are experts in philosophy, they have delved deeply in science, they are well acquainted with critical research, but they know nothing of the Prophets.

The Word of God, itself is to them a hidden book, neither studied nor searched.

Many men go to church with a question mark before every Scriptural quotation.

The pew seldom holds a place of power and authority among the unregenerate. The pew, and the people who fill it, are forever talking back to God.

No audience to which Christ preached was ever more saturated with skepticism and dominated by doubt, than the average audience of to-day.
