1581. One in Deity

1581. One in Deity

One in Deity

"The Lord our God is one Lord" (Deu_6:4).

1. God the Father Is Very God

"We have one Father, even God" (Joh_8:41).

This Scripture states the contention of the Jews. The Lord Jesus Christ granted their contention, but said unto them: "If God were your Father, ye would love Me; for I proceeded forth and came from God."

We do not suppose that there is any one who will doubt the fact that the Father is God. There are some men living who claim to be atheists, but they are few and far between.

It is the fool who hath said in his heart, "There is no God."

2. God the Son Is Very God

"In Him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily" (Col_2:9).

"His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God" (1Jn_5:20).

In the Book of Titus, are the following striking sentences:

"That they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour" (Tit_2:10).

"The glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour" (Tit_2:13).

"The kindness and love of God our Saviour" (Tit_3:4).

"Shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour" (Tit_3:6).

"The commandment of God our Saviour" (Tit_1:3).

"Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour" (Tit_1:4).

Thus the Holy Spirit wrote through Paul, asserting the Deity of the Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.

In Second Peter, there are also striking statements:

"The righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ" (2Pe_1:1).

"The everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ" (2Pe_1:11).

"The knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ" (2Pe_2:20).

"The apostles of the Lord and Saviour" (2Pe_3:2).

"The knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ" (2Pe_3:18).

No one, excepting in the Spirit, can call Jesus, Lord. Peter, however, did call Him Lord, and in this, recognized Him as God.

Jude speaks the same as Paul and Peter, for he concludes his Epistle, addressing Deity as "the only wise God our Saviour."

Jesus Christ is God.

3. God the Holy Spirit Is Very God

"Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty" (2Co_3:17).

Ezekiel said: "The hand of the Lord God fell there upon me, * * and the Spirit lifted me between the earth and the Heaven, and brought me in the visions of God to Jerusalem" (Eze_8:1, Eze_8:3). The Lord God of Eze_8:1, is the Holy Spirit of Eze_8:3.

When the angel, Gabriel, spoke to Mary concerning the birth of Christ, he said: "The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee." In this expression, we must either admit that God the Spirit, and God the Father, work in perfect unison, or else we must admit that the Holy Ghost and "the Highest" are one person. In either case the Holy Ghost is God.

If the Father, the Son and the Spirit are each God, it does not follow that there are three Gods; but three persons, one God.
