1606. Three Distinct Persons Are Seen in the Wilderness Temptation
Three Distinct Persons Are Seen in the Wilderness Temptation
"Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
"If Thou be the Son of God.
"Jesus * * was led by the Spirit into the wilderness" (Luk_4:12, Luk_4:3, Luk_4:1).
It is not difficult to see that there are three personalities distinct and separate from each other in the wilderness temptation.
First of all, Jesus Christ spoke of His Father when He said, "Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God."
Secondly, the devil spoke to the Son, "If Thou be the Son of God."
Finally, Jesus was "full of the Spirit;" He was "led of the Spirit," and, after the temptation was over, we read that He "returned in the power of the Spirit."
The passages, as a whole, assert positively and plainly that there are three persons in the Godhead, each distinct from the other. It is impossible to do other than to acknowledge this. However, this does not mitigate that other fact that the three persons, the Triune Elohim, is one Lord.
