1686. Essentials Vs. Non-Essentials
Essentials Vs. Non-Essentials
"Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel" (Mat_23:24).
It is passing strange how some churchmen place emphasis on minor things, and utterly neglect major things.
1. There are those who would die in behalf of the doctrine of Separation of Church and State, but they never lift their voice in favor of the separation of the church and the world. Yet, which is the more important? Shall a church refuse to receive money from the coffers of the state, and yet practice continually an unholy fellowship with the world?
2. There are those who will fight to the finish for prohibition, but they permit the church to fellowship those who hold fashionable wine parties. Which is worse? A world, with the wine cup in its hand, or the Church, the Bride of Christ, with a wine cup in her hand?
3. There are those who are ready to condemn gambling, but they always condone the church card party. They become exceedingly wrathful against the down-town gambling house, but they never open their mouth against the folly of saints in fashionable and polite society playing cards.
