439 – What Is Meant by "Devotedness to God"?

439. What Is Meant by "Devotedness to God"?

We should be devoted to God because of his mercies (Rom_12:1), of his goodness (1Sa_12:24) and because of the call with which he invites us to him. The death of Christ and our redemption should be compelling forces. Our devotedness should be unreserved (Mar_6:24), abounding (1Th_4:1), persevering (Luk_1:74-75; Luk_9:62), and in life and death (Rom_14:8). It should be with our whole being, thus, with our spirit (1Co_6:20), with our bodies (Rom_12:1; I Cor. 630), with our members (Rom_6:12-13), and with our substance (Ex. 2239; Pro_3:9). This devotedness we should show by loving God (Deu_6:5), serving him (1Sa_12:24; Rom_12:11), walking worthy of him (1Th_2:12), doing all to his glory (1Co_10:31); bearing the cross (Mar_8:34), by self-denial (Mar_8:34), and by giving up all for Christ (Mat_19:21, Mat_19:28-29).
