155. Christ’s Goal

Christ unfolds that the purpose of His first advent was His atoning death at Calvary. This may be fully apprehended if we connect, what Luke alone brings out, the references to Jerusalem.

1. “His Decease, which He should accomplish at Jerusalem” (Luk_9:31).

2. “Stedfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem” (Luk_9:51).

3. “His face was as though He would go to Jerusalem” (Luk_9:53).

4. “Teaching and journeying toward Jerusalem” (Luk_13:22).

5. “It cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem” (Luk_13:33).

6. “It came to pass as He went to Jerusalem” (Luk_17:11).

7. “Behold, we go up to Jerusalem” (Luk_18:31).

8. “He was nigh to Jerusalem” (Luk_19:11).

9. “He went before, ascending up to Jerusalem” (Luk_19:28). There are no less than thirty-two references to Jerusalem in Luke’s Gospel, and nearly all of those mentioned, from the transfiguration scene to the accomplishment of His sacrificial atonement on Calvary, have their focus-point in His death.
