455. Indispensable Things

Talking with an aged saint, poor in this world’s goods, but rich in faith, she remarked, “There are a great many things I can do without.” Playfully I said, “Can you do without Jesus?” “No, no,” she exclaimed; “ten thousand times no!” Her exclamation reminded me of a Bible reading, which is as follows:

1. Propitiating Blood. “Without shedding of blood is no remission” (Heb_9:22).

2. Pleasing Faith. “Without faith it is impossible to please God” (Heb_11:6).

3. Paternal Chastening. “Without chastisement,… ye are not sons” (Heb_12:8).

4. Practical Holiness. “Holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord” (Heb_12:14).

5. Proving Works. “Faith without works is dead” (Jas_2:26).

6. Possessing Love. Without love, “I am nothing” (1Co_13:2).

7. Providing Power. “Without Me ye can do nothing” (Joh_15:5).
