463. “In Vain”
1. “Labour in vain” (Job_9:29; Isa_49:4). Work without God is always profitless, and brings benefit to none.
2. “Watch in vain” (Psa_127:1). Human measures need Divine might.
3. “Medicines… in vain” (Jer_46:11). Human productions cannot heal sinful maladies.
4. “Believed in vain” (1Co_15:2). The fact of Christ’s resurrection is the basis of our faith. If He is not risen, there is nothing in which it can rest, it therefore must be in vain.
5. “Run in vain” (Gal_2:2). The recognition of those who are in authority is essential to the possession of authority.
6. “Christ is dead in vain” (Gal_2:21). Christ having bore the curse of the law in His death for us, we are freed from its curse and consequences.
7. “Wise… in vain” (Jer_8:8). To say we are wise when we lack true knowledge is to show we are ignorant of both.
