548. Manna

The manna, as we know from Christ’s teaching, is a type of Himself as the Bread from Heaven—Joh_6:32, Joh_6:33. The typical teaching of the manna may be gathered from the following.

1. It was round in appearance—Exo_16:14; suggestive of Christ, who is the Eternal One, without beginning and without end—Rev_1:8.

2. It was small in size—Exo_16:14; typical of Christ, who became a Babe in Bethlehem, and was a Man among men—Luk_2:11-12, Luk_2:16.

3. It was white in colour—Exo_16:31; which indicates Christ as the Righteous One—Heb_7:26.

4. It was sweet to the taste, it is said to be like wafers made with honey—Exo_16:31; typical of Christ as the precious One, whose Word is often compared to honey—Psa_19:10.

5. It is compared to Coriander seed, which was used as a condiment—Exo_16:31; and may be taken as typical of Christ, who will season all our life with His presence and grace—Col_3:15-16; Col_4:6.

6. It is further described as having the taste of sweet oil—Num_11:8; and is typical of Christ, who is ever fresh in the livingness of His love and truth—Heb_13:8.

7. It is further identified with the dew which fell upon the ground—Num_11:9; and may be taken to represent the fact that Christ can only be known and appreciated through the ministry of the Holy Spirit—Eph_3:16, Eph_3:17.
