578. “No Orders, Except From the King”

Or, “Seven Times Go, From God”

“Things whatsoever I have commanded” (Mat_28:20). Major-General Sir George Younghusband, the Keeper of the Jewel House of the Tower of London, who has been granted a vacant good service pension, enjoys a curious privilege in that “he hath no superior officer in Court or Kingdom.” He receives no orders except from the King himself, or conveyed to him through the Lord Chamberlain. The origin of the rule is clear, for in more turbulent days it would have been easy for some traitor to order the Keeper to hand over the King’s jewels to him. In spite of this care, however, the jewels were tampered with and sometimes stolen. The magnificent “aquamarine,” which used to be on the top of the King’s Crown, was found to be of glass; where the original went none can say.

As the Keeper of the jewels receives no orders but through the King himself, so there are seven commands which the Lord alone gives. These commands are found in seven “Go’s.”

1. Adjustment. “Go and tell him of his fault” (Mat_18:15).

2. Activity. “Go and work today” (Mat_21:28).

3. Alertness. “Go out and meet Him” (Mat_25:6).

4. Attention. “Go home to thy friends and tell,” etc. (Mar_5:19).

5. Fruitfulness. “Go and bring forth fruit” (Joh_15:16).

6. Separation. “Go and sin no more” (Joh_8:11).

7. Testimony. “Go and preach the Gospel” (Mar_16:15). When our Lord says “Go,” faith recognises His authority, and love is swift to respond to His direction.
