Public support for the Roe v. Wade decision to legalize abortion continues to decline. According to a survey reported by a Harris poll in May 2006, only 49 percent of more than one thousand adults surveyed supported Roe, marking the first time that less than half of the United States population endorsed the ruling made by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1973. Forty-seven percent oppose Roe, while 4 percent are not certain or refuse to answer.
The lowest previous support for Roe in a Harris poll was in 1985 with 50 percent. The highest backing for Roe in a Harris survey was in 1991, when 65 percent of Americans said they endorsed the decision. In 1973, 52 percent supported Roe.
