CHURCH, CATHOLIC

CHURCH,
CATHOLIC

The church is called “catholic” or “universal” because it has spread throughout the entire world, from one end of the earth to the other. It is also called catholic because it teaches fully and unfailingly all the doctrines which men should know about, both visible things and invisible things, the realities of heaven and earthly things. The church is also called catholic because it brings under religious obedience all classes of men, subjects and rulers, uneducated and learned. The last reason the church deserves to be called catholic is because it cures and heals without restriction every type of sin that the soul or body can commit, and because it possesses within itself every type of virtue that can be named, whether exercised in words, actions or other types of spiritual charism.
