LETTERS
In 1568 Scotland, Hues and Coomans were arrested in Antwerp, in the Netherlands. In a letter from prison they wrote: “Since it is the will of the Almighty that we should suffer for his name, we patiently submit; though the flesh may rebel against the spirit, yet the truths of the gospel shall support us, and Christ shall bruise the serpent’s head.
We are comforted, for we have faith;
we fear not affliction, for we have hope;
we forgive our enemies, for we have charity.
Do not worry about us, we are happy because of God’s promises and exult in being thought worthy to suffer for Christ’s sake.
We do not desire release, but fortitude;
we ask not for liberty, but for the power of perseverance; we wish for no change but that which places a crown of victory on our heads.”
