Of the 2,000 contributors in the fourteenth edition of Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations, only 7.5% of the contributors were women, and only 0.5% of all the quotations cited were penned by women. The Oxford Book of Quotations bettered those percentages – barely: 8.5% women, 1% quotations by women.
