A CONGRESS OF ANIMALS—AN OBJECT TALK ON KINDNESS TO
OUR DUMB FRIENDS
Prepare yourselves with large and striking pictures of the common animals. Tell the children that God has given the animals into the hands of men, to take care of, but men are doing it so poorly and so unkindly that the animals have come together to talk about it, and make complaint. Ask the children to name one animal that men treat cruelly.
If they name a horse, take out your picture of a horse and pin it to the blackboard. The horse has come to make complaint. What has it to complain of? Ask the children, and write down what they tell you and what you wish to add, putting the list under the picture. It will read “Poor food, cold barn, beating, blinders, check-reins, exposure,” etc.
In similar way call out pictures of the dog, the cat, the bird, the sheep, the cow, the pet rabbit, the gold fish of the aquarium, etc. Fill the board with the pictures of these animals and the list of their woes.
At the close be sure to bring out some of the things that children can do to lessen these evils, and call on the children to pray that they may themselves be more kind, and that they may help others to be more kind, to these dumb friends and helpers of man.
