CHURCH-GOING

CHURCH-GOING

Morbus sabbaticus is a peculiar disease. The symptoms vary, but never interfere with the appetite. It never lasts more than 24 hours. No physician is ever called. It is contagious. The attack comes on suddenly on Sundays. The patient awakens as usual, feeling fine, and eats a hearty breakfast. About 9 a.m. the attack comes on and lasts until about noon. In the afternoon the patient is much improved and is able to take a ride, visit friends, watch TV, work in the garden, mow the lawn, or read the Sunday paper. The patient usually eats a hearty supper, and is able to go to work on Monday. This ailment is often FATAL in the end – to the soul!

WARNING: Do not attend a church which prefers science to Scripture, reason to revelation, theories to Truth, culture to conversion, benevolence to Blood, goodness to grace, sociability to spirituality, play to praise, programs to power, reformation to regeneration, speculation to salvation, jubilation to justification, feelings to faith, politics to precepts.

The British churchman goes to church as he goes to the bathroom, with the minimum of fuss and no explanation if he can help it.

Ronald Blythe

For a man to argue, “I do not go to church; I pray alone,” is no wiser than if he should say, “I have no use for symphonies; I believe only in solo music.”

George A. Buttrick

Do not ride in cars: they are responsible for 20% of all fatal accidents.

Do not stay at home: 17% of all accidents occur in the home.

Do not walk on the streets or pavements: 14% of all accidents occur to pedestrians.

Do not travel by air, rail, or water: 16% of all accidents happen on these.

Only .001% of all deaths occur in worship services in church, and these are usually related to previous physical disorders.

Hence the safest place for you to be at any time is at church!

Mark Leslie

Remembering that worship is one of our proper responses to Almighty God, an experience designed for our benefit, and a part of our Christian witness, we and our children will faithfully attend the worship services of the Church.

Moravian Covenant for Christian living

I believe a very large majority of church-goers are merely unthinking, slumbering worshipers of an unknown God.

C.H. Spurgeon

I know there are some who say, “Well, I have given myself to the Lord, but I do not intend to give myself to any church.”

Now why not?

“Because I can be a Christian without it.”

Are you quite clear about that? You can be as good a Christian by disobedience to your Lord’s commands as by being obedient? There is a brick. What is it made for? To help build a house. It is of no use for that brick to tell you that it is just as good a brick while it is kicking about on the ground as it would be in the house. It is a good-for-nothing brick. So you rolling-stone Christians, I do not believe you are answering your purpose. You are living contrary to the life which Christ would have you live, and you are much to blame for the injury you do.

C.H. Spurgeon

Going to church doesn’t make you a Christian, any more than going to a garage makes you an automobile.

Billy Sunday

If absence makes the heart grow fonder, how some folks must love the Church!

Gerald I. Teague

Every one that hangs about the court does not speak with the king.
