DELAWARE, STATE OF

(December 7, 1787), was the 1st State admitted to the Union. The Constitution of the State of Delaware, adopted 1776, stated:

Article XXII. Every person who shall be chosen a member of either house, or appointed to any office or place of trust … shall … make and subscribe the following declaration, to wit: “I, ________, do profess faith in God the Father, and in Jesus Christ His only Son, and in the Holy Ghost, one God, blessed for evermore; I do acknowledge the holy scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be given by divine inspiration.”(until 1792)1900

The Constitution of the State of Delaware, adopted 1831, stated:

It is the duty of all men frequently to assemble together for the public worship of the Author of the Universe; and piety and morality, on which the prosperity of communities depends, are thereby promoted. …

No power shall or ought to be invested in or assumed by any magistrate that shall in any case interfere with … the free exercise of religious, , worship.1901

The Constitution of the State of Delaware, adopted 1897, stated:

Preamble. Through Divine Goodness all men have, by nature, the rights of worshipping and serving their Creator according to the dictates of their consciences.1902

Article I, Section 1. It is the duty of all men frequently to assemble together for the public worship of Almighty God; and piety and morality, on which the prosperity of communities depends, are hereby promoted.1903
