HUMANISM; OPPOSITION

HUMANISM;
OPPOSITION

Leaders and groups and nations often think they have something great and enduring and superior going for them in human society, and because we don’t jump on the bandwagon and remark, instead, that “This, too, will pass away,” we get a look of anger with the comment, “You are a cynical pessimist.”

Let me say that it is very difficult to have any brains in this day in which we live and not get blamed for it. It is hard to have any insight and not be considered a cynic. It is hard to be realistic and not be classed with the pessimists.

But with most men and their methods and movements in society, a few months, at the most a few years, bring an entirely new perspective. People who disagreed with you and were engaged in flag-waving for someone’s scheme or speech six months ago are probably looking back on that same thing and see it now just as you foresaw it.

It is a wonderfully exhilarating thing to be able to anticipate and foresee just a little bit—but it is also an ability that will bring you much criticism and hostility from those with lesser foresight and judgment.
