INDISPENSABILITY:
PRIDEFUL THOUGHTS OF
I once preached a sermon in which I said that the Lord is self-sufficient and does not really need us. I bothered some people by that, for they thought the Lord really needed them. They thought that if they should resign or retire, the Lord would have to scramble to find someone who could take their place. What a low view of God! Could you get down on your knees and cry out to a God who needed you? I could not. A God who needed me would be a God in real trouble. God does not have to have me—or you, either. That may be bitter medicine for some to take, because we have come to believe that we are indispensable and that, when we go, a great tree will have fallen, leaving a vacant place against the sky. I am afraid that when some of us die, it will be like a stalk of grass eaten by a grasshopper, and nobody will notice the difference!
