The Old Testament. It stands as a giant, mysterious body of literature into which many Christians rarely venture. We are caught in a vicious circle: as believers we don’t read the Old Testament because we don’t understand it; but we don’t understand it because we don’t read it. However, the Old Testament is the foundation and context out of which the New Testament grew. In order to fully appreciate the inheritance given us by Christ, we must strive to grasp the significance of the ages prior to the Messiah’s coming.
Throughout 1991, Tabletalk will study the broad message and content of the Old Testament from the teaching of R. C. Sproul. After considering some preliminary reasons for studying the Old Testament, this month we will look carefully at Genesis 1 and 2. For this reason, a number of days will use the same passages as the text since we will be considering the overall issues of creation. Even when repetition is called for, be faithful and ask God to bring new understanding as you study Coram Deo, wholly before the face of God, in His presence, and unto His glory.
