LAW,
PURPOSE OF
THE LAW of God is like an X-ray. It will reveal a problem but it can’t fix it.549
[Law, Purpose of; Self-Sufficiency, Danger of]
Rom. 7:7; James 2:10
THE LAW is like a speed limit sign on the expressway. If it says sixty miles an hour, that’s the law. Now, that law cannot make you drive sixty miles an hour; it just gives you the law. In fact, that law means nothing to most people! However, it validates the fact that if a policeman pulls you over when you are going seventy-five or eighty miles an hour, he has the right to do it because you have broken a revealed standard.
If he pulls you over for going sixty miles per hour and there was no speed limit sign at all, then you could argue before the court that there was no law or sign posted. How could you then be condemned for going against a speed that was never told to you? In other words, the purpose of the law is to reveal the standard by which sin is to be measured.550
